The halibut were biting.
April 2008 Fishing Report
The second half of April finally has every indication to herald the arrival of Spring. The weather has been an impediment to our usual early fishing season, but there are quality winter Chinook out there. Once the offshore venues are consistently accessible, I will let you know what the fishing is really like. April 29: The sport fishing activity still remains at a very low level compared to the last sixteen years. It is likely that the earlier runs of Chinook are not in significant concentrations in the broad expanse of our coastal waters. That can all change on the next tide. Halibut fishing offshore is good.
Changes in Halibut Regulations for 2008
If you were not already aware of it, there has been an adjustment in the combined allowable catch of halibut in all British Columbian waters for the 2008 season due to conservation concerns. A few years ago a fisheries minister unilaterally decided that our sports sector was entitled to 12% of the annual allowable catch of halibut, just when the growth in sport fisherman's interest in halibut was expanding dramatically. When details of various possible strategies to implement the 2008 reduction were being tossed around, you might imagine the alarm charter operators were experiencing. After reviewing the information posted below, my feeling is the consultative process worked. The changes implemented for 2008 will address conservation concerns and sustain public interest in our halibut fishery. A great deal of effort in the consultative process by members of the Sport Fishing Advisory Board had everything to do with this positive result, and I thank them once again.
